Why this practice
Non-manipulative attention to the natural breath builds concentration and equanimity. Nothing to fix or achieve, only to notice, again and again.

The simplest breath practice: just notice the natural rhythm of your breathing without trying to change it. Called Anapanasati (ah-nah-pah-nah-SAH-ti) in Pali, it is the foundation of mindfulness meditation as taught by the Buddha. The breath becomes an anchor for attention, building quiet, present-moment awareness.
The science behind it
Psychologically, watching the breath is an interoceptive exercise — it trains the brain’s capacity to sense internal bodily signals. Repeatedly returning attention to breath strengthens networks involved in attention and body-awareness (insula, anterior cingulate) while reducing habitual mind-wandering and reactive responses (e.g., amygdala reactivity). Over time this improves emotion regulation and lowers rumination: you learn to notice sensations and thoughts as passing events rather than immediate commands, which supports calm, clarity, and equanimity without needing to change the breath itself.

How to practice
- Sit in a stable, upright posture.
- Let the breath be completely natural, usually through the nose. Do not lengthen or deepen it.
- Rest attention on the most vivid point of sensation, often the nostrils.
- When the mind wanders, gently return to the breath. This is the practice.
- Let the orb be a soft suggestion, not a command.
