Why this practice
Forcing both inhale and exhale doubles the pranic stimulation compared to Kapalabhati. Bhastrika rapidly oxygenates the blood, builds intense internal heat, and clears stagnant energy throughout the body.

Both the inhale and exhale are forceful and equal — like a blacksmith's bellows pumping air into a fire. Called Bhastrika (bellows) in Sanskrit, this is more intense than Kapalabhati because both directions of the breath are active. It builds significant heat and energy quickly. The science behind it
On a neural level, deep and active breath patterns strongly engage brainstem respiratory networks and influence autonomic outflow via the vagus nerve and baroreflex pathways. Rapid, forceful breaths tend to reduce parasympathetic (vagal) tone and increase sympathetic drive while also providing a powerful interoceptive signal: the body’s sensors for stretch, pressure, and gas levels report back changes in a way that shifts attention and emotional state. Practiced in short, controlled rounds, this can sharpen focus and clear sensations; done too long or without preparation it can cause dizziness, tingling, or anxiety because of altered CO2, pH, and cerebral blood flow.
From a psychological standpoint, the strong somatic feedback from bellows breath increases bodily awareness (interoception) and can rapidly change mood and arousal. That makes Bhastrika useful when the goal is energizing or clearing the mind, but it also means it should be used intentionally, with awareness of contraindications (cardiovascular issues, pregnancy, vertigo) and with gradual buildup to avoid overstimulation or hyperventilation effects.

Slow, full breaths to absorb the first wave of heat.
Second round. Stay with equal force on each direction.
Long, deep breaths to absorb the charge and let the body cool slightly.

How to practice
- Sit tall with spine erect and nostrils clear.
- Drive the inhale powerfully through the nose, expanding belly and chest.
- Immediately drive the exhale back out with equal force, belly pulling in.
- Keep the rhythm even and strong, about one full breath per second.
- Face and shoulders stay relaxed. The power comes from the diaphragm.
- Stop at any sign of dizziness. Avoid during pregnancy or high blood pressure.
