The vagus nerve runs near the glottis. Humming on the exhale activates it directly, suppressing the stress response faster than most breathing techniques. The sound also gives the mind something to follow other than thought.

After a slow inhale, exhaling through a gentle hum creates vibration that resonates through the skull and nervous system. Called Bhramari (humming bee) in Sanskrit, this is one of the eight classical pranayamas. The vibration activates the vagus nerve, helping lower stress hormones and quiet the mind. Even one round can noticeably shift your state.

The science behind it
Humming (Bhramari) combines a slow exhale with sustained vocal vibration that engages structures in the throat and nasal passages. The mechanical vibration stimulates sensory (afferent) fibers in the larynx and pharynx that connect to the vagus nerve and brainstem autonomic centers. Because the technique emphasizes a long, controlled exhale, it shifts the autonomic balance toward parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) activity — commonly seen as lowered heart rate and improved heart-rate variability — which helps quiet the stress response.

Humming also produces measurable changes in the nasal and sinus environment: it markedly increases nasal nitric oxide (NO) production, which affects airway physiology and may contribute to a sense of ease in breathing. Psychologically, the steady hum provides a focused, repeatable sensation and sound to anchor attention; that increased interoception (tuned awareness of internal signals) reduces rumination and supports present-moment calm. Mild changes in CO2 and cardiorespiratory coupling during longer exhales further promote vagal tone through baroreflex and respiratory–cardiac interactions, supporting relaxation without requiring breath retention or extreme changes in ventilation.
