Why this practice
Progressively extending the exhale activates the parasympathetic system in stages, which the nervous system accepts more readily than a sudden instruction to relax. The final equal-ratio phase anchors the transition without re-stimulating.

Three phases of progressively longer exhales guide the nervous system down from the activity of the day into readiness for rest. Each phase lowers arousal a little more — like descending stairs into quiet. A deliberate, gentle end-of-day ritual.
The science behind it
Breath rate and depth also alter blood CO2 levels, which influence chemoreceptor activity and subjective sensations from the body (interoception). Gentle, staged increases in exhale length lower arousal without provoking breathlessness or large CO2 swings; this gradual descent helps the nervous system accept a shift toward rest. Practicing in this way supports a clearer internal signal that the day is done, improving the transition into sleep or restorative states.

Nose in, longer nose or soft mouth out, then easy nasal breath.
How to practice
- Lie down or find a position you could fall asleep in.
- Let the eyes close and the jaw go soft.
- Begin with four in through the nose, six out through the nose. Nothing forced.
- In the second phase, nose in for 3; exhale through the nose or softly through parted lips.
- If a sigh or yawn arises, let it come through the mouth. That is the body releasing.
- In the final phase, breathe gently through the nose and notice how much quieter you have become.
