The science behind it
Breathing slowly through the nose at a steady rhythm (about five seconds in, five seconds out in this practice) shifts the balance of the autonomic nervous system toward parasympathetic activation. Slow, regular breathing increases heart rate variability (HRV) and promotes a coherent heart rhythm pattern; these changes are mediated partly by the vagus nerve, which links the heart, lungs, and brain and helps downregulate stress responses. Gentle nasal breathing also preserves a modest level of carbon dioxide (CO2) compared with rapid mouth breathing, which helps maintain smooth blood flow and supports calmness and mental clarity.

Pairing slow heart-centered breathing with a felt sense of appreciation or care engages interoception — the brain’s sensing of internal bodily states — and social-affective neural circuits. Positive affect and soft attention to the chest can increase parasympathetic tone, enhance the sense of safety (the social engagement system described in polyvagal theory), and facilitate release of affiliative neurochemicals tied to bonding and calm. Together, the physiological effects (vagal input, HRV/coherence, CO2 balance) and the psychological focus (interoceptive awareness, positive emotion) create a reliable pathway to a softer, more regulated heart-centered state.
