The science behind it
Slow, equal inhalations and exhalations (about six seconds in, six seconds out) reliably downshift autonomic arousal. Breathing at this rate tends to increase respiratory sinus arrhythmia and baroreflex sensitivity, measurable markers of parasympathetic (vagal) influence on the heart. That shift raises heart-rate variability (HRV), reduces sympathetic “fight-or-flight” tone, and promotes a calmer baseline for attention and emotion.

Because nasal, diaphragmatic slow breathing slightly reduces alveolar ventilation compared with rapid breathing, it modestly elevates CO2 toward normal physiological levels. That stabilizes chemoreflex drive and can reduce breath-triggered anxiety from low CO2. Nasal breathing also delivers endogenous nitric oxide to the airways, which supports oxygen exchange and has local vascular effects that complement the autonomic downshift.

Directing felt attention to the heart (interoception) amplifies these physiological effects by engaging brain regions involved in bodily awareness and emotion regulation (insula, medial prefrontal cortex). The combined effect—slow paced nasal breaths plus gentle heart-focused attention—supports calming, improves emotional resilience, and prepares the nervous system for more interiorized practices without demanding strong breath retention or forceful techniques.
