A slow, steady breath paired with an inner sense of awareness rising up the spine on the inhale and descending on the exhale. The central pranayama of Kriya Yoga as taught by Paramahansa Yogananda — the spine is visualized as the channel through which life energy moves. A deeply meditative practice.

The science behind it
Slow, nasal diaphragmatic breathing—as used in this Spinal Breath practice—tends to increase parasympathetic (vagal) tone and heart-rate variability. Breathing slowly and through the nose engages lung stretch receptors and baroreflex pathways that communicate with the vagus nerve, supporting a shift away from sympathetic arousal. Unlike rapid or forceful breathwork that lowers CO2, gentle slow breathing helps maintain healthier CO2 levels and a steady blood-gas balance, which is associated with reduced lightheadedness and more stable autonomic regulation.

Directing attention along the spinal axis and pairing inhale/exhale with the hum of “Om” engages interoception—the brain’s sensing of internal bodily signals. Strengthening interoceptive awareness (insula, somatosensory networks) can reduce rumination and promote single-pointed attention, which supports meditative absorption. The sustained vocalization and gentle vibration from chanting also stimulate laryngeal and vagal afferents, adding a calming sensory input without forcing breath patterns.   5. Mentally chant Om once on the inhale and once on the exhale if it helps focus.
