Directing breath and attention along the sushumna cultivates pranic balance and meditative absorption. This simplified form honors the Kriya tradition without requiring initiation.

A slow, steady breath paired with an inner sense of awareness rising up the spine on the inhale and descending on the exhale. The central pranayama of Kriya Yoga as taught by Paramahansa Yogananda — the spine is visualized as the channel through which life energy moves. A deeply meditative practice.
The science behind it
Directing attention along the spinal axis and pairing inhale/exhale with the hum of “Om” engages interoception—the brain’s sensing of internal bodily signals. Strengthening interoceptive awareness (insula, somatosensory networks) can reduce rumination and promote single-pointed attention, which supports meditative absorption. The sustained vocalization and gentle vibration from chanting also stimulate laryngeal and vagal afferents, adding a calming sensory input without forcing breath patterns. As always, keep the breath comfortable and avoid strain; consult a clinician if you have respiratory, cardiovascular, or seizure conditions.

How to practice
- Sit with spine erect in a posture that keeps the back straight.
- Inhale slowly through the nose for 8, feeling energy rise from the base of the spine to the medulla.
- Hold gently for 4 at the top of the breath.
- Exhale through the nose for 8, feeling the current descend the spine to the tailbone.
- Mentally chant Om once on the inhale and once on the exhale if it helps focus.
- In the second phase, lengthen the breath and deepen the interior gaze.
- Practice on an empty stomach when possible.
Visualization ideas
- On the inhale, a thread of light climbs the spine to the point between the eyebrows. On the exhale, it flows back down to the base of the spine.
