Why this practice
Kumbhaka trains the nervous system to be fully present without the anchor of breath movement. The retained CO2 in antara deepens focus; the empty space in bahya cultivates equanimity with absence.

Kumbhaka — Sanskrit for breath retention — is the intentional pause between breathing cycles. Holding after a full inhale (antara kumbhaka) builds expansion; holding after a full exhale (bahya kumbhaka) reveals deep stillness. In Patanjali's eight-limb yoga system, kumbhaka is the fourth limb of pranayama. Start with short holds and extend gradually over time.
The science behind it
Psychologically, breath retention is a strong interoceptive signal: it amplifies awareness of internal bodily states (the insula and related networks) and trains the brain to tolerate physiological uncertainty without immediately reacting. That strengthens top‑down prefrontal control over automatic threat responses and can reduce reactivity over time. Because CO2 is a potent stimulus linked to panic in some people, comfortable, gradual practice and attention to safety (never push to blackout; practice seated or supine and stop if dizzy or panicky) are important so the nervous system adapts without triggering dysregulation.

How to practice
- Sit in a stable, upright posture with the spine long.
- Breathe only through the nose for this practice.
- In the first phase, inhale fully through the nose and hold with soft, full lungs.
- Hold for 10 seconds. No gripping. Let the fullness be comfortable.
- Exhale slowly and completely through the nose.
- In the second phase, exhale fully through the nose and hold on empty lungs.
- Hold for 8 seconds. The empty space is the practice.
- If discomfort arises, reduce the hold length rather than straining.
