A brief pause after the exhale allows CO2 to rise slightly, training the body's chemoreceptors to tolerate it. Over time this reduces chronic over-breathing, which underlies anxiety, poor sleep, and scattered attention.

Most people breathe more than their body needs, which can wash out CO2 and quietly drive anxiety and fatigue. Buteyko method — developed by Russian physician Konstantin Buteyko — trains lighter, slower nose breathing to restore a healthier balance. The practice feels counterintuitive: breathing less can actually feel calmer and better.

The science behind it
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is not just a waste gas — it actively shapes how oxygen is delivered and how the brain senses breathing. Slightly higher CO2 increases cerebral blood flow and shifts the hemoglobin–oxygen relationship (Bohr effect) so tissues get oxygen more easily. Habitual over-breathing lowers baseline CO2, which can heighten respiratory drive and produce symptoms like lightheadedness, jitteriness and poor sleep; a controlled, reduced-volume pattern lets CO2 rise a bit, restoring more efficient gas exchange.

Chemoreceptors in the brainstem detect CO2 and pH and drive ventilation; training tolerance for mild increases in CO2 calms that drive over time. Slower, lighter nasal breathing also supports parasympathetic engagement (often via vagal pathways), increases heart-rate variability, and promotes nitric-oxide production in the nasal passages — all of which favor calmer physiology. Practicing short pauses after exhale is a low-intensity way to improve interoception and reduce reactivity to the internal sensations of “air hunger,” so the nervous system learns that small rises in CO2 are safe rather than threatening.

  1. Breathe only through the nose for the entire practice. Close the mouth gently.
  2. Keep the breath small and quiet. Half the usual volume is enough.
  3. Aim for a breath so light that no one around you would notice.
  4. After each exhale, pause briefly and sit with the mild air hunger.
  5. Do not push the pause to discomfort. A hint of hunger is the target.
  6. If a deep breath is needed, allow one, then return to light and slow.
