Advanced practice for experienced practitioners. Go slowly, stay aware of your body, and leave time to ground afterward.
Why this practice
Extending each phase to twenty seconds drops breath rate toward one cycle per minute, which calms mental chatter and balances the hemispheres. Preparation and integration keep the practice safe.

One complete breath cycle takes a full minute: 20 seconds to inhale, 20 to hold with full lungs, 20 to exhale. A Kundalini Yoga practice said to synchronize the brain hemispheres and build deep calm. Work up gradually — start with a shorter count (such as 5-5-5) and extend over several weeks.
The science behind it
Holding the breath for a portion of the cycle raises arterial CO2 briefly. That rise stimulates chemoreceptors and increases interoceptive signaling — the brain’s sense of what’s happening inside the body. With careful, gradual practice this can build CO2 tolerance and strengthen body awareness, which helps people notice and regulate emotional responses. Because CO2 changes can cause lightheadedness or discomfort if done too quickly, it’s important to progress slowly and integrate calming recovery breaths between rounds.

How to practice
- Sit in a meditative posture with spine tall and body very still.
- Spend the first phase in long deep breathing through the nose.
- When the slow cycle begins, inhale steadily for 20 counts filling belly, ribs, then chest.
- Hold the breath gently with full lungs for 20 counts. No gripping.
- Exhale slowly and completely through the nose for 20 counts.
- If 20 counts strain you, use 10 or 15 per phase until the rhythm is easy.
- If you fight the breath, finish the round and breathe deeply for one minute before resuming.
- Close with quiet breath and feel the clarity in body and mind.
