A gently extended exhale signals safety to the nervous system. Pairing it with felt contact and the freedom to sigh lets bracing release slowly, without overwhelm.

This practice uses small, gentle doses of breath to help the nervous system release tension at its own pace — never more than feels safe. Based on somatic and trauma-informed principles, it pairs a softened exhale with awareness of where your body touches the ground. No pushing. Just permission.

The science behind it
Slow, gently extended exhales shift the balance of autonomic input toward the parasympathetic side by engaging pathways of the vagus nerve. The vagus conveys safety signals from the body to the brain; when exhalations are longer than the inhalations, vagal tone tends to increase and heart-rate variability patterns associated with calm can emerge. This is part of why a soft, prolonged out-breath feels grounding and reassuring rather than activating.

Nasal breathing and occasional soft sighs each play complementary physiological roles. Nose inhalation increases nitric oxide production in the nasal passages, which supports better oxygen transfer and filtration; the patterned 4-count inhale here is short and steady, keeping CO2 and O2 balance gentle. Sighs — larger, spontaneous exhalations — recruit deeper lung volumes and reset respiratory variability, which helps relieve chronic bracing in the chest and neck without forcing large changes in gas chemistry. Paired with attention to internal sensations (interoception), these small, titrated breath steps help a person remain within their window of tolerance: they provide corrective sensory input that the nervous system can interpret as safe, without overstimulation or dissociation.

  1. Find a position that feels safe and supported.
  2. Notice the places your body touches the chair, floor, or bed.
  3. Breathe in through the nose for 4, gently, only as much as feels good.
  4. Breathe out for 6 through the nose, softening wherever you are holding.
  5. If a sigh or yawn wants the mouth, let it come. That is release.
  6. Stay slow. There is nowhere to get to.
