Why this practice
Emotion is physiological before it is psychological. Short exhales discharge the autonomic charge without requiring the mind to process anything. The witness phase honors whatever arose. The long exhale settles what remains.

Short, forceful exhales discharge the physical tension that stored emotion lives in — the body releases what the mind alone cannot reach. Based on somatic and trauma-informed approaches, emotions may surface and move. The long settling phase at the end allows the system to integrate. Have support nearby if you are in a tender time.
The science behind it
Short, forceful exhales provide a clear motor action that can help discharge trapped autonomic charge: they recruit the abdominal and expiratory muscles, briefly change thoracic pressure, and create salient interoceptive signals (strong sensations in the body). Those signals give the nervous system a chance to complete interrupted defensive or mobilization responses and to update the body’s sense of safety. Done within a safe window, this can reduce the intensity of held emotion without requiring cognitive processing first.
Attention to bodily sensations (interoception) during the practice helps integrate what has moved. Noticing subtle changes in heartbeat, warmth, or muscle tension improves the brain’s information about internal states and supports learning that the body can return to balance. Because breathing also affects CO2 levels and chemoreceptor drive, keep forceful or fast patterns brief and allow ample slow settling breaths afterward so CO2 and autonomic tone rebalance.

Short, audible exhale through the open mouth. Let a sound come if it wants to: huh, ha, or nothing at all.
Slow, even breath. Do not push anything. Let the body do what it does: sigh, tremble, cry, or simply rest.
Long exhale. Feel the weight of what moved beginning to lighten.
Short sharp exhales to discharge, then long slow exhales to settle.
How to practice
- Find a private space where you can make sound if needed.
- Bring to mind what you are carrying: grief, frustration, hurt, or just weight.
- Inhale for 4, then exhale sharply through the open mouth for 2.
- Let any sound come on the exhale. It does not need to be words.
- In the witness phase, stop directing. Just breathe and feel.
- In the settling phase, let the long exhale carry out what has been loosened.
- Rest for a few minutes when it is over. This practice does its work slowly.
