Why this practice
The right nostril activates the sympathetic branch and left hemisphere, raising body temperature, alertness, and outward focus. A few minutes of exclusive right-nostril breathing provides sustainable activation without the crash of stimulants.

Breathing exclusively through the right nostril — closing the left with a finger — is said to activate the warming, energizing side of the nervous system. Called Surya Bhedana (sun-piercing) in Sanskrit, research links right-nostril breathing to greater sympathetic activation: more heat, focus, and outward energy.
The science behind it
On the autonomic side, patterns of inhalation, short breath holds, and the balance of inhalation versus exhalation affect carbon dioxide (CO2) levels and vagal (parasympathetic) outflow. Faster or more forceful right‑nostril inhalation tends to raise arousal via sympathetic pathways and reduce vagal brake briefly; controlled breath holds and longer exhales will then influence CO2, baroreflexes, and interoceptive signals that feed back to the brain. Paying focused attention to the breath (interoception) amplifies these effects by increasing cortical monitoring of bodily state, which is why a short, intentional right‑nostril practice can produce reliable alertness without stimulants.
These effects are generally short‑lived and dose‑dependent—small, repeated sessions produce transient shifts in arousal and attention rather than long‑term rewiring by themselves. They work best when combined with attention and clear intention, and should be used cautiously if you have cardiovascular or acute respiratory conditions; if uncertain, check with a clinician before trying sustained unilateral breathing practices.

Inhale right nostril, hold briefly, exhale left nostril. Repeat.
How to practice
- Sit tall. Bring the right hand to Vishnu Mudra: thumb and ring finger ready.
- Close the left nostril with the ring finger.
- Inhale slowly through the right nostril for 6.
- Close both nostrils briefly, hold for 3.
- Open the left nostril and exhale fully for 6.
- Inhale again only through the right. Keep the left closed throughout the inhale.
- Continue at a steady, unhurried pace.
