Why this practice
Sustained over-breathing followed by retention shifts blood chemistry, floods the system with energy, and can release stored emotion. Practice seated or lying down, never in water.

Rounds of deep, rhythmic mouth breaths followed by a long hold on empty lungs generate inner heat, energy, and a powerful shift in focus. Inspired by Tibetan Tummo practice and popularized by Wim Hof. Always sit or lie down — never practice in or near water — and stop if you feel faint.
The science behind it
At the same time, vigorous breathing and the subsequent retention engage autonomic reflexes: the sympathetic nervous system often surges during the effortful rounds (increasing adrenaline and alertness), and a parasympathetic/vagal rebound can follow during holds and slow recovery breathing. This autonomic ebb and flow helps explain the reported increases in energy, focused clarity, and the strong bodily sensations that may surface. Practicing this pattern also sharpens interoception—the brain’s sensing of internal bodily signals—so emotional material or stored tension can become more noticeable and sometimes release. For safety, these physiological effects mean the technique should be done seated or lying down in a safe environment and avoided by people with certain cardiovascular or respiratory conditions unless cleared by a clinician.

After the last mouth exhale, hold on empty. Recovery inhale through the nose or mouth, then hold full.
Second round: mouth in, mouth out, belly then chest.

How to practice
- Sit or lie down somewhere safe. Never practice in or near water.
- Take around 30 full breaths through the mouth: deep in, relaxed out.
- After the final breath, exhale through the mouth and hold on empty.
- Hold without strain until you feel the urge to breathe.
- Take a big recovery breath in through the mouth or nose and hold it for 15.
- Release and begin the next round. Rest fully when done.
